Olsen, P. & J. Olsen.  1978.  Alleviating the impact of human disturbance on the breeding Peregrine Falcon. 1. Ornithologists. Corella 2: 1-7.

The impact of ornithologists on nesting Peregrine Falcons Falco peregrinus is discussed in terms of interference with individual pairs and their offspring and the subsequent validity of observations made and data collected.  Suggestions are presented for the minimising of this interference.

Lane, S.G.  1978.  Some results from banding Little Terns at Stockton, New South Wales.  Corella 2: 8-9.

From January 1974 to November 1977, 252 Little Terns Sterna albifrons were banded at Stockton, on the estuary of the Hunter River, N.S.W., during wader banding activities.  All were caught at night in mist nets (wader nets).  Because of the concentration on waders, full details of plumage, moult, etc. were not always recorded for the Little Terns, particularly during the first two seasons.  However, some details are discussed in relation to the status of the species in N.S.W.; details of weights and measurements are given

Milledge, D.  1978.  A nest box used by Striated Pardalotes. Corella 2: 10-11.

In June 1970 eight nest boxes of the design shown in Figure 1 were fixed to the sides of eucalypt trees at Tinderbox in south-eastern Tasmania.  The boxes were positioned at heights varying from 2 m to 4 m above the ground in an attempt to attract Forty-spotted Pardalotes Pardalotus quadragintus as pan of a study of the ecology of this species.

Lane, S.G.  1978.  Some results from banding Japanese Snipe near Sydney, New South Wales.  Corella 2: 49-51.

From November 1971 to 4 March 1978, 114 Japanese Snipe Gallinago hardwickii were banded in eight locations in the Sydney district during 27 banding outings.  Eight banders and numerous assistants participated.  Netting problems are outlined; measurements, weights and details of recoveries are given.

van Gessel, F.W.C.  1978.  An estimation of the population density of Shearwaters breeding on Broughton Island, New South Wales. Corella 2: 52-53.

The density of breeding burrows in shearwater colonies on Broughton Island is assessed.  The field census methods used are described and estimates of burrow densities are given.

Debus, S.J.  1978.  Notes on Wedge-tailed Eagle behaviour. Corella 2: 55-55.

Observations on the behaviour of Wedge-tailed Eagles Aquila audax involving lambs are detailed for two separate cases at different locations in New South Wales.  Notes on display and piracy are also included.

Robertson, J.S.  1978.  Olive-backed Oriole - age indicator notes.  Corella 2: 56-58.

Details of plumage changes of Olive-backed Orioles Oriolus sagittatus are given.  The data are taken mainly from specimens obtained from the Queensland Museum.  An examination of the literature is made in an attempt to clarify ageing.

Boehm, E.F.  1978.  Banding the Yellow-plumed Honeyeater on the Mount Mary Plains, South Australia.  Corella 2: 65-68.

Yellow-plumed Honeyeaters Lichenostomus ornatus have been banded and retrapped over a number of years in the Sutherlands and Bower districts 110 km N.E. of Adelaide, as part of the Mount Mary Plains Survey in South Australia.  Numbers of the species present fluctuate seasonally more than is indicated by the very limited movements recorded between banding stations.  Results are presented on habitat preferences, relative abundance, longevity and on variation in the weight of birds in the population studied.  Changes in the colours of soft parts and in the plumage from juveniles to the adults are described.

Warham, J. & D.L. Serventy.  1978.  Decline of the Gannetry on Cat Island, Tasmania.  Corella 2: 69-70.

Cat Island, Tasmania, is one of the few breeding places within Australia of the Australian Gannet Morus serrator.  It is the most accessible of the gannetries and has been the focus of attention for many visitors since Flinders first surveyed the islands in the area.  Apparently the gannetry was discovered by Flinders but he made only incidental mention of it in his book (18141 p. cxii).  He stated that on 8 January 1799 ŒMr. Bass went on shore to the small, south-eastern islet [= Cat Island] whence he brought a boat load of seals and gannets‚.  The following summary of the gannetry‚s history comes partly from an unpublished review of Australian gannetries (by D.L.S.) and partly from the files of the Tasmanian National Parks and Wildlife Service

Barton, D.  1978.  Breeding Fairy Penguins at Twofold Bay, N.S.W.  Corella 2: 71-72.

Reilly, P.N.  1978.  Birds of Gabo Island, Victoria. Corella 2: 73-75.

A description of Gabo Island Victoria, appeared in the Seabird Island series in Corella (Reilly, 1977).  As there is little else in the ornithological literature about this island, its avifauna is described, together with additional details of the seabirds.

Disney, H.J.de S.  1978.  The age of breeding in the Stubble Quail and Japanese Quail.  Corella 2: 81-84.

Among Stubble Quail Coturnix novaezealandiae pectoralis collected in late summer and autumn 1968 and 1969 in the Mudgee district, N.S.W, there were young birds still showing some juvenile plumage and which were apparently breeding or had done so.  Morris and Kurtz (1977) stated that  when heavy rain in this district produced a growth of grass on the stubble fields at a rate faster than stock could eat it down, the number of button quail Turnix spp. built up.  They also observed this for Stubble Quail (pers. comm,).

Fordyce, J.C.  1978.  Flame Robin banding in the Shepparton district, Victoria.  Corella 2: 85-88.

The results of six years banding of Flame Robins Petroica phoenicea in the Shepparton district of northern Victoria are presented.  These data confirm and amplify the results of Mary Bateman‚s study on this species (Bateman 1975).

McGill, A.  1978.  Bird banding experiences in North America. Corella 2: 90-91.

I consider myself fortunate to have been invited to take part in two important bird-banding projects during a visit my wife and I made to North America in 1976.  The first was at the Tanque Verde Ranch in south-western Arizona, USA, on 15 April and the second was during 16-17 May at Prince Edward Point Ontario, Canada.  A regular annual or bi-annual banding programme has been in progress for some years at both places.
