ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING - 2010

The Association's Annual General Meeting will be held on 13th March 2010, in Building 22, Newington Armory, Sydney Olympic Park, Sydney, commencing at 1.30pm.  All members are invited to attend.

 SCIENTIFIC DAY 2010

“DNA - What secrets does it hold for the study of Australian birds?”

De-oxyribonucleic Acid - little did they know the revolution in medicine and biology that this would bring.   Crick and Watson’s delineation of the structure of DNA in the 50‘s was a seed that is now bearing copious fruit. For ornithology, that fruit has already been plucked to give us a revolution in taxonomy, reflected in the changing family tree of the bird world.

This is the most well-known use of DNA.  Today we will explore this a bit more, but also push the boundaries a bit, and learn of the other uses for DNA analysis in bird research. For this powerful tool will unlock all sorts of other secrets of bird life for us.

Guest speakers will include:

Dr Leo Joseph (Australian National Wildlife Collection, CSIRO)
Dr Walter Boles (Ornithology, Australian Museum)
Dr Graham Cam (formerly Biological Sciences, University of Sydney)
Dr John Trueman (Australian National University)
Mr James Brazill-Boast (Macquarie University)
