AUSTRALIAN BIRD STUDY ASSOCIATION Inc.
1. PROGRAMS FOR STORING AND HANDLING AUSTRALIAN BIRD BANDING RECORDS
There are 2 suites of programs:
Both suites of programs store and manipulate ABBBS bird banding record data. The programs only work under WINDOWS: Versions 95, 98, 2000, or XP (see below).
NB: If there is a friendly Mac programmer out there who would do us a Mac version, please contact the President email: <president at absa dot asn dot au>
WHAT THE PROGRAMS DO
These packages produce data and index files which allow searching of the data file by band number, retrap, species number, date, age, sex and locode. The programs will read new data directly into the program, or from a comma or tab delimited text file produced by this or another program, the data being in the ABBBS coding sheet order. Selected data can be corrected, listed and written to a comma-delimited text file which can be used to transfer data to another database or to send to ABBBS.
HOW MUCH SPACE DO THEY TAKE UP?
The programs and auxiliary files require about 0.5 MB of space.
Data and index files for the program can become quite large eg. a total of about 72Kb for 185 bird records, or about 3.2Mb for 10400 bird records.
WHAT TO DO AFTER DOWNLOAD
Double click on the zip file that is downloaded. The file will automatically 'unzip' itself into a group of files in the chosen folder. The README.TXT file should then be read for further information and install instructions.
WHAT OPERATING SYSTEMS?
Please note that there are 2 versions of each of the main database program:
1. A program with a graphics display for users ofWINDOWS 95 or 98 (spec958.exe)2. A program with no graphics display to for users of WINDOWS 2000 or XP (specwxp.exe)
Graphics are only used to display histograms of a specie's measurements and are not important for the working of the database. The non-graphics version will also run under WINDOWS 95 or 98.
A suite of programs to estimate means and standard deviations of biometric measurements for a population of a bird species with a dimorphic structure (e.g. males and females of different sizes). The programs will then estimate limits to differentiate between the two.
The programs and auxiliary files require about 0.8 MB of space.
Please note that there are 2 versions of the main program:
1. the program with a graphics display to run under WINDOWS 95 or 98;
2. the program with a graphics display to run under WINDOWS 2000 or XP.
The programs can be down-loaded from the ABSA website as a compressed file:
STATSW958 for the WINDOWS 95 or 98 version of the package; DOWNLOAD
STATSWXP for the WINDOWS XP or 2000 version of the package. DOWNLOAD
STATSWXP will also work under WINDOWS 95 or 98 but gives graphs on the screen with lower resolution. Therefore, it may work better with older graphics cards under those versions of WINDOWS.
Both may be expanded into a group of files on a selected folder by double-clicking on STATS958 or STATSWXP. The STATSHLP.TXT or STATSHLP.DOC and DATAINFO.DOC files should then be read for further information or the statshlp program run.
Both the down-loaded compressed files contains the following files:
1. Program files
a. Birdstat.exe - the control program;
b. Statshlp.exe - the help program;
c. curve*.exe - the six estimation programs;
2. Subsidiary files
a. all611.fnt - the font file for use in printed graphics;
b. svga256.bgi - the screen graphics driver only necessary for WINDOWS 95,98 version in BIRDSTAT958;
b. egavga.bgi - the screen graphics driver only necessary for WINDOWS
XP or 2000 version in BIRDSTATWXP;
c. Statshlp.doc - the WORD document file with the HELP information;
d. Statshlp.txt - the text file with the HELP information;
e. Datainfo.doc - the WORD document file with information about data format;
f. Example.txt - an example text file of data for investigation;
g. Example.doc - the WORD document file giving information on the EXAMPLE.TXT data.
