AUSTRALIAN BIRD STUDY ASSOCIATION Inc.

AUSTRALIAN BIRD STUDY ASSOCIATION FUND FOR AVIAN RESEARCH

The specific purpose of this fund is to assist with the publication of information, the provision of education, and the carrying out of research into various aspects of the avifauna of Australia.

Donations will be gladly accepted from people willing to assist with the aims as stated in the Constitution of the Association. The fund has been granted Tax Deductible status, and donations of $2 or over are tax deductible.

RESEARCH GRANT APPLICATIONS

Each year, the Association awards grants to its members to support specific projects that increase our knowledge of Australian birds. Usually, two grants are awarded for a combined total of $900. The purpose of the grants is to fund equipment purchases to enable new projects to get started, or to sustain long-term projects.

Applications should include:

  • a cover letter stating the dollar amount requested, and the details of any federal or state licences or permits held
  • a proposal of no more than two pages which clearly states the questions, objectives and/or hypotheses to be addressed in the project, the basic methods of the project, and the broader significance of the project (i.e., how it might help us understand or conserve more than just the particular species or site being studied)
  • a one-page budget and budget justification outlining the basic costs of the total project, detailing the amount requested from ABSA and what it will be spent on, and why this funding is crucial to the success of the project

Note: To be eligible for consideration, applicants must be members of ABSA. Applicants must be licenced to purchase/own any equipment requested (e.g., mist nets) or must be working under a senior researcher with appropriate licences. The requested assistance must be usable on its own, without dependence on other, not yet obtained financial assistance. Preference will be given to projects that involve field work (rather than laboratory or captive bird work) on Australian native birds. Preference may also be given to requests that can be fulfilled from the Association's Mist Net Service.

Condition of Acceptance: Grant recipients must be willing to submit at least one paper resulting from the project for possible publication in the Association's journal, Corella.

Applications must be received by 31 January, 2008. Either email a pdf file to <secretary@absa.asn.au> or mail the application to:
